Where the Hell is Deadhorse Alaska?
WHERE THE HELL IS DEADHORSE
ALASKA?
Chris'1999 TRIUMPH TIGER 900,
Peter's 1997 Yamaha Thunderarse
Danny's Yamaha TDM 900
Danny had told me of many trips he had planned on.One being a trip across the U.S. to the top of Alaska. It just so happened my brother Chris was planning the same trip in June of 2004.
I, on the other hand, had nothing planned. I created a trip in which I would tag along hoping to get across the U.S. and then head back. Small potatoes compared to Alaska.
.
Danny shipped his bike over on a freighter carrying Ford focus' from England to beautiful New Jersey. Due to delays and a group of
"right plonkers" from Yonkers, the TDM arrived a couple of weeks late. The trip was still on, I just wouldn't be able to go as far.
TDM pack mule. Includes global positioning and bells and whistles. . Check out the compass.
Danny's tire choice.
Danny's magazine choice. The "alone in helmet" sticker is an inside joke.

This plate will baffle our friends at the borders.
This would be the first time I had taken my ThunderArse on a trip longer than a couple of hours. I used all of the custom RKA soft luggage that came with the Yamaha and my top GIVI 42 litre hard luggage. Bungee nets held down my sleeping bag and air mattress.
Danny (being he would be traveling 11,850 mi farther than I ) had 2 GIVI 42 litres and a couple of water proof OXFORD duffle bags.
Chris' TIGER had the Triumph factory side bags and a GIVI MAXIA top box as well as a waterproof (rafting ) duffle bag.
We all cranked on our rear shock spring and set out.
Our trips had been through Maine AKA VACATIONLAND for the past few years. This trip sent us West through UpstateNew York State and into Canada crossing at Cornwall. Upstate New York is a great ride, through the Lake George region and crossing the Adirondack Mountains. Quite open roads winding through the valleys. We passed through Lake Placid home of the 1980 Winter Olympics (The one when a group of Yankee kids beat Russian Pros at Hockey and brought home the gold). Thinking about that, did they really "bring home the Gold"? The medals were already in the U.S. so they actually "kept home the Gold". Also Eric Heiden "kept home" 5 Gold medals in speed skating.
So knowing all this, we did not stop, we continued to the border.
We learned that the border agents are particulaly interested in the travels of white men from England. Danny was brought in for questioning at the border, No Kidding really. While Danny was getting the water torture Chris and I enjoyed watching the locals go through the border crossing and then accelerate as fast as they could. We couldn't figure out the reason they did this. 75% of the cars passing through would go flying by. In the other direction they would do what looked like a 1/4 mile run across the bridge. They didn't seem to have any regard for their cars. May be that tires and transmissions are cheap up that way.
Chris ...looking on . Why are they doing that?
This was our first stop in N.Y. . I think TKC should start a rust repair shop. Check out that Blazer .
First night, Pembroke Ontario.
I slept on the floor... a mistake.
Good food, nice room, hard floors
Clean restrooms.
On our second day we headed West on 17 catching a glimpse of Lake Huron.
Hey kid, HURON MY BIKE !!
All along 17 we met friendly locals and saw local art.
There were more rusty horses throughout the town to take pictures of, I just felt that after the "sheep in Scotland picture taking" episode I better move on.
We came across a biker gang they called themselves "Hell's AY ngels".
Sault Ste. Marie Ontario was the end of the road on our second night. Unfortunately for me it was the end of the road for my back. The Thunderarse was a bit firm on the shock and sleeping on the floor didn't help.
My back really felt like...
Once again we ate well at a fine restaraunt. As we went back to our room I told Chris and Danny they would no longer have Pete to kick around.
It was flag day in Canada and Sault Ste. Marie put on a great fireworks display.
Very nice.
